Intersecting Social Science and Conservation

چکیده

There is a growing consensus that current conservation strategies are unable to cope with the acceleration of human-caused environmental degradation. The philosophies underpin and shape traditional initiatives have begun shift toward “people nature” approach, based on new deeper understanding relational values. With this shift, there increasing concern about social impacts need consider not only aspects conservation, but also issues equity justice. This especially important for marine avoid repeating exclusionary unjust protective measures sometimes seen in terrestrial conservation. Additionally, lack compliance management schemes, failure dimensions realities local communities hindered success initiatives. Therefore, engagement science better human-wildlife human-nature connections necessary. Community-based approaches payment ecosystem service schemes can provide insights lessons such improved participatory management. Furthermore, use offers range methods be used improve consideration those dimensions. These include different theoretical frameworks relationships between people, society, nature, innovative more flexible, adaptive systems-based complex socio-ecological systems. Increasing mainstreaming inclusion will depend overcoming institutional barriers as capacity, time, funding opportunities context science.

Democratizing Nanotechnology : Intersecting the Philosophy of Science and Science Policy

This thesis is an examination of the relevance of the philosophy of science to science policy, focused around an analysis of philosopher Philip Kitcher’s 2001 Science, Truth and Democracy. I consider and draw upon Kitcher’s work from a variety of perspectives. Initially, I use Kitcher’s work to argue for a more democratic approach to nanotechnology policy. The thesis then examines the philosoph...
